Aldi Ice Skater TV Advert

Aldi UK celebrates its status of proud sponsor of Team UK at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games with a new advert that also highlights the “Everyday Amazing” prices available at the supermarket chain.

The 30-second spot features an Aldi customer who starts slipping on ice on his way home, but manages to do just fine and prove actually he is a quite good ice skater. As he enters a coffee shop, British ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean (former British, European, Olympic and World champions), who are inside, indulging themselves with a sweet treat, say “That was amazing!”. “I know, I saved on all these products at Aldi.” – the man answers excitedly, raising the shopping bags in the air and making the two champions look at each other.

At the end of the advert it is specified that, at Aldi, you could save 30% on specific products (exclusive brands and fresh products), which are shown on screen, with respect to other 4 big supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, and Morissons).

The music used as soundtrack when the man is skating is the one-movement orchestral piece “BolĂ©ro” by the French composer Maurice Ravel. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia,Torvill and Dean performed a free-dance interpretation of Ravel’s famous musical composition, that earned them a gold medal and an unprecedented perfect score of 6.0 for artistic impression from all nine Olympic judges.

On its website, Aldi presents the Team UK, consisting of Lizzy Yarnold (Skeleton), Karie Ormerod (Snowboard), James Woods (Freestyle Skiing), and Team Muirhead, made up of Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, and Lauren Gray (Curling), and gives some tips shared by the athletes on various topics, such as how to stay healthy and how to stay fit.
