American personal genomics and biotechnology company 23andMe (named for the 23 pairs of chromosomes in a normal human cell) has launched a new commercial, inviting people to explore their connection to the world with over 75 reports on ancestry, health, traits and more.
The 30-second spot, titled “Journey Through Your DNA”, features Nicole, a young woman who travels the world to meet people sharing the same DNA as her, including Asia (as she is 29% East Asian), where she takes selfies with locals, Africa (as she is 46% West African), where she plays chess with locals and dances with them in the street, and Scandinavian countries (as she is 3$ Scandinavian), where she takes a bath in a mountain lake.
“Knowing your DNA connects you to the world.” – the voiceover says at the end of the commercial, inviting you to “Know more about you and the 23 pairs of chromosomes that make up your DNA at 23andme.com”.
The song playing in the background is “Getting to Know You” by Gertrude Lawrence, from the 1951 Rodgers and
Hammerstein musical “The King and I”. The song has been recorded by many other artists over the years, including Barbara Cook, Doris Day, Bing Crosby, Elaine Paige, Della Reese, James Taylor, Andy Williams, and others.
