Comedy legends Martin Short and Steve Martin co-star in a new humorous ad for Wells Fargo, promoting the bank’s Active Cash credit card and its unlimited 2% cash back benefit. The spot, part of the “Be a 2%er” campaign created by BBDO New York, centers around the concept of joining an exclusive “2%er” club of savvy cardholders who value the straightforward unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases with the Active Cash card.
In the ad, the two real-life friends are in a bookstore. While Martin points to the books he’s read, Short humorously notes that he hasn’t read any of them. At the checkout, Martin, having selected several books, says he left his wallet way in his back pocket and asks Short to cover the bill. The latter enthusiastically uses his Wells Fargo Active Cash credit card, mentioning he earns unlimited 2% cash back.
Meanwhile, Martin opens one of the books and reads about the parasitic relationship between whales and barnacles. Short quips that he’s familiar with parasitic relationships, calling his friend a barnacle as they leave. The commercial concludes with an onscreen message highlighting that Wells Fargo Active Cash credit cardholders earn unlimited 2% cash back on purchases.
This ad campaign marks the first collaboration between Wells Fargo and the legendary comedians Martin Short and Steve Martin. It’s also the inaugural project for Wells Fargo’s consumer cards portfolio from BBDO New York. The integrated campaign will be featured across national TV, digital video, social media, and other channels throughout 2024.
