Go.Compare has signed a major, multi-year shirt sponsorship deal with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), which will see its logo feature on the back of all of the WRU’s senior international and pathway teams in both the men’s and the women’s game, and has launched a new ad campaign to spread the news. The company’s mascot, Gio Compario, stars in a new advert, dubbed “Wales’ 16th player – Kitted Up”, showcasing the jersey.
The spot features the tenor down to WRU HQ wearing rugby shorts, but his usual white shirt accessorized with a white bowtie, and dark blue blazer. The players are shown wearing a similar outfit until a man shows up, asking Gio to wear the jersey.
“Now Go.Compare is proudly sponsoring the WRU. Look how’s come to lend a helping hand,” the voiceover says in the 25-second video, referring to Compario. “Hmmm, seems like the role of Kit Manager doesn’t suit our Gio,” adds the narrator.
The end of the advert sees the players heading to the locker room to take their shirts and blazers off. Gio shows the Go.Compare text imprinted on the jersey.
The comparison site becomes, thus, the first company in history to take on a back-of-shirt sponsor for the senior Wales men’s or women’s teams in a new seven-figure deal.
Go.Compare will debut its logo on the famous red jerseys when the senior men’s side take on England next month, on August 5th. The same kit design will be worn by Wales Women when they head to the new WXV tournament in New Zealand in the autumn.
