Lionsgate has released the trailer for the upcoming film Joy Ride, from the producers of Neighbors and the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians.
Directed by Adele Lim, who co-wrote the script with Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao, the movie, described as a “hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery”, stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu as four unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. According to the official synopsis, “When Audrey’s (Ashley Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Sherry Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Stephanie Hsu), her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.”
The cast also includes Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians), Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Alexander Hodge (Insecure), and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians).
The trailer gives viewers a glimpse into the adventures the four friends live throughout their journey, including the encounter, on a train in China, with a young American woman who turns to be a drug dealer and blows some drugs on them so that the police would assume they are drug dealers, too. They have their passports stolen and try to pass the security check by pretending they are K-pop superstars.
The song used in the trailer is “Crazy” by Doechii.
Joy Ride will be released in theaters this summer, July 7, 2023.
