Netflix has released the trailer for Celeste Barber’s new comedy, Wellmania, co-created by Brigid Delaney and Benjamin Law and adapted from Delaney’s nonfiction book, “Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness”.
The eight-part series features the world-famous comedian as Liv, an Australian food critic in New York who gets to become a judge on a TV cooking show. On a quick trip home to Australia, she hits a snafu where she can’t return to the US unless she passes a health test. According to the official synopsis, “the good-time girl with a commitment to a Dionysian lifestyle has to plunge into an unfamiliar world to “fix” herself – that of the wellness cult. From gym regimes and coastal jogs to vegan diets and herbal laxatives, it’s a raucous adventure in an extreme world. But what she really needs to reckon with is what drives her fear and insecurities, and if she’s there for the people in her life.”
The cast also includes JJ Fong, Simone Kessell, Alexander Hodge, Remy Hii, Virginie Laverdure, Johnny Carr, Genevieve Mooy and Lachlan Buchanan.
The trailer gives viewers a glimpse at the challenges Liv must deal with on her radical wellness journey in order to get in a better state and be able to return to New York and get the job she dreamed of. She has to avoid refined sugars, saturated fats, and eat more legumes, all while doing all kind of workouts, from pilates to spinning, jogging and more. In one of the scenes, she is shown throwing up and telling another woman that it’s vegan spew, if it’s any consolation.
The song used in the trailer is “Always Go The Distance” by Lee Richardson, Jonathan Murrill, Tom Ford & James Cocozza.
Wellmania will be available for streaming on Netflix next month, March 29.
