Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming Italian drama series The Lying Life Of Adults, based on the latest novel by Elena Ferrante.

Directed by Edoardo De Angelis, the limited series adaptation revolves around Giovanna (Giordana Marengo) and her transition from adolescence, when every problem seems unsolvable, to adulthood, uncovering her family’s lies while discovering an unprecedented Naples.

The cast includes Giordana Marengo, Alessandro Preziosi, Pina Turco, Valeria Golino, Raffaella Rea, Biagio Forestieri, Giuseppe Brunetti, and Giovanni Buselli.

The trailer gives viewers a glimpse at Giovanna’s life and shows how it changes after hearing her father telling her mother, referring to Giovanna, “She’s starting to look like my sister.” The mother replies “Oh, come on. She’s a monster!” and this determines the teenage girl to journey across the city of Naples to meet with this supposedly hideous aunt, Vittoria (played by Valeria Golino). The latter, who instantly remembers her niece and the bracelet she gifted her at birth, helps her experience a different side of the city. They bond, but it turns out that she also lies to Giovanna.

In one of the scenes, the youngster asks her aunt “Auntie, why did you lie to me?” and gets an unexpected answer: “Because it was a beautiful lie”.

The songs used in the trailer are “Celebrity Skin” by American alternative rock band Hole, from their third studio album of the same name, and “E Mo E Mo by Peppino Di Capri.

Season 1 of The Lying Life Of Adults, consisting of six episodes, premieres on Netflix on January 4, 2023.
