Warner Bros. has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Barbie movie, based on “Barbie” by Mattel.
Directed by Greta Gerwig from a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, the movie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera,Emma Mackey, Rhea Perlman, and Simu Liu.
The teaser trailer opens with a “2001: A Space Odyssey” parody and features a group of little girls playing with baby dolls until they see a huge Barbie doll that comes to life and winks at them. The children are then shown throwing away their dolls and even destroying them. The video then snaps to feature Barbie surveying the neighborhood from the top of her Barbie Dreamhouse, and also gives a first look at Ryan Gosling’s Ken.
“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been… dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until….” the voiceover – Helen Mirren – says.
The background song is Strauss’s “Also sprach Zarathrusta”.
Barbie is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
