Life insurance company MassMutual has released its Christmas commercial, titled “Awkward Silence Night”, which aims to normalize the uncomfortable and taboo topics of personal finances through an original take on a classic holiday song.
The spot, created by Grey and directed by Camila Zapiola through Stink, raises the question whether you should talk money at your next gathering and highlights that talking about money doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Set to the tune of the Christmas carol “Silent Night”, the video shows a family around the dinner table, acting as if something really bothered them. The song reveals that “money talk ruined appetites” and “anger steams from table afar”. Viewers get to find out that “financial advice was the final straw” ands, as a consequence, “no one’s eating their corn”.
“Talking about money doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. We can help” onscreen lines read at the end of the commercial.
