Amazon has dropped a new commercial to promote its Black Friday sales event. This time the protagonists are Romeo and Juliet.
The spot features the two iconic Shakespearian characters attending a winter holiday gathering together with their families, known for their decades-long feuds. The tension between the Montagues and Capulets increases due to the glares they are throwing at each other, but it soon vanishes, and “tragedy was avoided” thanks to Juliet’s initiative of bringing over a karaoke machine, which she bought from Amazon during the Black Friday event, saving big.
The partygoers are then shown having fun all together and using the karaoke device to show off their singing skills on songs like “My Money Don’t Jiggle Jiggle, It Folds” by Duke & Jones x Louis Theroux.
The commercial ends with the voiceover saying the tagline “Shop legendary deals”.
The Amazon Black Friday Week, taking place from November 18 through November 28, will be giving shoppers the chance to get discounts of up to 50% off a range of products across multiple categories.
Romeo and Juliet are not the first iconic characters to be featured in an Amazon commercial. Previous ads from the e-commerce giant featured Red Riding Hood turning the wolf into a “good boy” with a squeaky toy she bought from Amazon, a yeti dancing in the snow to the rhythms of Caterina Valente’s 1959 hit single “Bongo Cha Cha Cha”, and a yeti buying a hair dryer from Amazon and impressing everyone at a holiday party with his glamorous look.
