Rakuten has unveiled its Super Bowl commercial, starring Hannah Waddingham.
The spot, titled “High Stakes” and filmed at Hatfield House near London, features the British award-winning actress (known for her roles in Ted Lasso and Game of Thrones) as a cunning high-roller playing a private poker game with a savvy Rakuten shopper. The latter not only proves that she has all the products the antagonist has (such as luxurious high heels, a vacuum robot, and a flatscreen TV), but she also wins the day by showing all the Cash Back she earned by buying all those items through Rakuten.
The commercial, which also features “The World’s First Podcast” hosts Erin and Sara Foster, ends with Waddingham’s character standing up and leaving the room in a hurry, shouting to someone to get her cat, named Leonardo. An onscreen line urges viewers to get the Rakuten app.
“I’m so grateful for the memorable experience of filming my first Super Bowl commercial with Rakuten, especially since it’s their first Super Bowl ad. Portraying a mischievous character allowed me to take on the kind of role I love to play – one with a bit of sass and a devious laugh. I also love that this spot shows everyone can feel like a winner when they shop with Rakuten. Who doesn’t love the satisfaction of a good deal?” Waddingham said in a press statement about her partnership with Rakuten.
