M&M’s has skipped the Super Bowl this year, after a 12-year streak, but has kicked off the new year with a new humorous spot featuring some of its spokescandies and a mime.
The commercial features Red, Green and Brown in an office, with five coworkers, ready to have a snack together during a break. When one of them suggests inviting Jacques the mimicker to join them, a colleague refuses to do that. “Sure, he struggles on conference calls, but he’s such a dedicated employee,” Green says to his defense, which makes another colleague add that he “can really pull off stripes”.
The five colleagues decide thus to ask him to join them. Jacques stands up to go to them but there’s a wind of some kind stopping him from moving forward, apparently.
The commercial concludes with the tagline “M&M’s for all funkind” appearing on the screen.
The candy brand has its very own mascots since 1954, all of which represent different flavors of the treat. There the snarky, know-it-all Red, the dull-witted Yellow, the paranoid Orange, the sultry Green, the posh Brown, and the confident Blue. According to a press release issued in January 2022, the cute mascots will undergo a new look in an effort to promote inclusivity. The refresh will include the change of Green’s classic high-heeled boots into a pair of fashionable sneakers and a more “neutral” shade for the mascots’ arms and legs.
