Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming film Malcolm & Marie, written and directed by Sam Levinson, and starring Zendaya and John David Washington.
According to the official synopsis, “When filmmaker Malcolm (John David Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya), return home from a movie premiere and await his film’s critical response, the evening takes a turn as revelations about their relationship surface, testing the couple’s love”.
The trailer opens with Malcolm describing Marie as “by far the most excruciating, difficult, stubbornly obnoxious woman” he has ever met in his entire life. She is also heard listing some of his features, such as “romantic,” “sensitive,” “sweet” and “an emotional f**king terrorist”. While onscreen images show the two in the kitchen, preparing dinner, Marie says in voiceover that what supports the tension of a relationship is the unknown, the mystery, the “what if” factor. In another scene, which sees them smoking outside, she shares one of her thoughts with her partner. “You know what, Malcolm? I feel like once you know someone’s there for you and once you know they love you, you never actually think of them again”.
“This is not a love story. This is the story of love” onscreen lines read throughout the trailer, which features the song “I Will Carry You” by Safari Riot & Old Man Saxon.
Malcolm& Marie opens in select theaters this month and premieres on Netflix next month, on February 5.
