Tesco has released its Christmas advert, declaring that Santa is taking a year off from the naughty list this year, and therefore we can have all the treats we like this holiday season.
The humorous, light-hearted spot, created by BBH London, opens with a young girl in a Tesco store, who reveals that she gave her little sister a bad haircut and worries that she might end up on Santa’s naughty list. The voiceover, comedian Asim Chaudhry, then tells her to relax as, “after this year, Tesco says there is no naughty list.” A range of other characters are then shown worrying about the naughty things they’ve done during 2020 and that might put them on the naughty list this Christmas. While some of them confess purchasing too many rolls of toilet paper, one man says he once forgot to sing Happy Birthday when he washed his hands, another one says he didn’t donate to Captain Tom, a mother says she didn’t teach her kids physics or math. Santa is also featured in the ad, revealing that he might be on vacation.
The narrator tells everyone that this year there’s no list and urges them to tuck in and have all the treats they want because this year, at Tesco, there is no naughty list”.
The soundtrack is provided by Britney Spears’ iconic single “Oops!…I did it again”.
The advert was praised by viewers for being hilarious, but tired parents have jokingly blasted the supermarket for taking the naughty list away, as they now can’t use it to bribe their kids to be good.
