Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming original series Ratched, which tells the origin story of one of the world’s most iconic characters, Nurse Ratched (the villain of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”).
The show, from the creator of American Horror Story, is set in 1947 and stars Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched, a young woman who seeks work at a psychiatric hospital in Northern California, where – according to the official synopsis – “new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind”. “On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born,” the series logline also reveals.
The cast ensemble also includes Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Jon Jon Briones, Finn Wittrock, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okenedo and Vincent D’Onofrio.
The trailer, scored by “Big Spender (from “Sweet Charity”)” by Helen Gallagher & Thelma Oliver, gives viewers a glimpse into Mildred’s life at the psychiatric hospital since the day she arrives, when she replies to a porter that he had asked her a personal question.
Ratched is set to arrive on Netlix this fall, on September 18.
