Netflix has released the trailer for the upcoming movie The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron.
Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard revolves around a a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die, who – led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron) – have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. According to the official synopsis, “when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary”.
The trailer, scored by MIA’s single “Borders,” gives viewers a glimpse into the lives of the five mercenaries, including the encounter with young Nile, who has the ability to heal fast after wounds. Willing to know if those she met are good guys or bad guys, Nile learns that “it depends on the century” and that, throughout history, they’ve protected this world, “fighting in the shadows, but it’s nearly impossible to disappear in the world we live in today”.
Described as “a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks,” The Old Guard is set to launch on Netflix this summer, on July 10.
