ITV has released the trailer for its upcoming drama series Quiz, inspired by the real-life events of Charles and Diana Ingram, who tried to steal a Million Pounds on ITV’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in 2001.
The show, directed by “The Queen” director Stephen Frears from a script by James Graham (playwright of “Brexit: The Uncivil War”), features Michael Sheen as iconic host Chris Tarrant, Sian Clifford as Diana Ingram and Matthew Macfayden as her husband, Charles Ingram.
Back in 2001, the couple, based in Wiltshire village, appeared on the popular quiz show, which gave contestants the chance to win a million pounds. They, along with Tecwen Whittock, an accomplice who was sitting in the audience, were accused of cheating their way to the big prize and stood trial for conspiring by coughing during the recording to signify the correct answers to the multiple-choice questions.
The cast also includes Mark Bonnar as Celador Television Chairman, Paul Smith, Helen McCrory as Sonia Woodley QC, Michael Jibson as Tecwen Whittock and Aisling Bea as ITV Entertainment Commissioner, Claudia Rosencrantz.
The trailer gives viewers a glimpse into the coughing scandal, which saw the Ingrams saying that wasn’t cheating, but judges declaring that it’s theft.
The channel that the first episode of the three-part drama will premiere on Monday, April 13 at 9pm.
The song playing in the trailer is Let’s Stick Together by Bryan Ferry.
