Netflix has released the trailer for the second season of its series After Life, starring Golden Globe winner Ricky
Gervais.
The show, written and directed by Gervais, revolves around Tony (Gervais), a writer for a newspaper who, in his effort to come to terms with his wife’s unexpected death, adopts a gruff new persona. According to the official synopsis, from this point on, he “decides to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes,” without caring about himself or anyone else. However, “it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know”. The series also stars Kerry Godliman as Tony’s wife, Lisa, Tony Way as Tony’s best friend, Lenny, Tom Basden as Tony’s brother-in-law, Matt, David Bradley as Tony’s dad, and Ashley Jensen as a Nurse to Tony’s dad, Penelope Wilton, Joe Wilkinson, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley, Mandeep Dhillon, Tim Plester, Roisin Conaty, and Diane Morgan.
The first season, consisting of six episodes, premiered on March 8, 2019, and saw Tony being rude to everyone around him, from coworkers to random people, including kids.
According to the streaming service, the upcoming season sees Tony, who’s still struggling with immense grief after the death of his wife, “trying to turn over a new leaf”. “Will he succeed in helping the people around him, or will he go back to being the same old Tony?” the streamer asks, leaving viewers wondering the same thing.
The trailer for season 2 features Tony talking about his life after Lisa’s death. “When she died, everyone tried to help me and they sort of saved me,” he says at some point. “I feel like I should help the people who helped me,” he confesses to a new friend, who tells him that that the last thing he should do is drink alone.
“When life takes a turn, hope is everything” onscreen lines read throughout the trailer, which is scored by “I’ll Be With You” by Nathan R. Coen & Jonathan Samuel Lloyd.
After Life Season 2 launches on April 24.
