Amazon Prime has dropped the trailer for its upcoming sci-fi comedy series Upload, from Greg Daniels, creator of “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation”.
According to the official synopsis, the show is set in the near future, in a world where people who are near death can be “uploaded” into virtual reality environments. The protagonist is party-boy/computer coder Nathan (Robbie Amell), who – after a car crash – is uploaded by his girlfriend, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards), into a VR world where he is guided by Nora (Andy Allo), the customer service who oversees the luxurious “Lakeview” digital afterlife (where Ingrid and her family have purchased space).
The trailer gives viewers a glimpse into Nathan’s life in the Lakeview world, where he gets to experience all kinds of situations, moments, pleasures, as well as frustrations, such as the moment when he can’t grab a certain drink from the fridge because an in-app purchase is required. He and Nora seem to slowly develop a relationship. He gives her a 5-star rating and she, who appears to have a crush on him, makes fun of him by telling him he can walk on water to make him fall into a lake. At the end of the trailer, Nathan is featured having a conversation with a boy who died falling into the Grand Canyon.
The soundtrack is the 1981 single “Once in a Lifetime” by the American rock band Talking Heads.
Season 1 of Upload, consisting of ten episodes, will be streaming on Amazon Prime Video on May 1, 2020.
