DICK’S Sporting Goods takes viewers on a journey back in time and celebrates the history of sports bras in a new
commercial, titled “Movement”.
“The first sports bra wasn’t made until 1977, when three women sewed two jockstraps together. That’s right, 1977,” Brandi Chastain, who serves as voiceover, says in the opening of the 60-second spot, which features a diverse cast of female athletes across decades wearing sports bras and doing various sports. The voiceover then highlights that what those three women made was more than a bra. “They started a movement. Of women in movement. Something made to restrict actually gave us all freedom. Movement can take you anywhere. And in 1999 it took me here,” Chastain also says, referring to the moment she removed her jersey, during the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and celebrated in her sports bra, adding that “where you go with it is up to you”.
The commercial, scored by Asia Chimelis’ song “Dubai,” ends with the tagline “Every Season Starts at Dick’s Sporting Goods” flashing across the screen.
