Universal Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming World War I epic 1917, directed by the Oscar-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, Sam Mendes.
The film, co-written by Mendes and Crysty Wilson-Cairns, stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as Schofield and Blake, two young British soldiers who, at the height of the First World War, are given a seemingly impossible mission. “In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers – Blake’s own brother among them.” the official synopsis reveals.
The cast also includes Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden and Claire Duburcq.
The trailer features Colin Firth as the commanding officer who assign the two soldiers the task to carry the fateful message across the enemy lines, including the moment he warns them about the massacre that will happen if they go ahead with a planned attack (1600 people will die). Several scenes show Blake and Schofield racing against time in their quest to do what they need to do. Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is also heard saying “There is only way this war ends – last man standing”.
Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020.
