Academy Award Winner Anthony Hopkins is Pope Benedict XVI and Golden Globe Nominee Jonathan Pryce is Pope Francis in the upcoming Netflix film The Two Popes.
The streaming service has released the trailer for the religious drama, which is inspired by the true events that lead to the retirement of Pope Benedict and the ascension of Cardinal Bergoglio (Pryce) to the papacy. According to the official synopsis, the movie is “an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years” and revolves around the relationship between Cardinal Bergoglio, who requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict. “Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world,” the synopsis reveals.
Directed by Fernando Meirelles, Academy Award Nominated Director of City of God and The Constant Gardener, The Two Popes tackles, judging by the trailer, which gives viewers a glimpse into several discussions between the two important figures, the tension between traditional Catholicism and Pope Francis’ more progressive, humanist approach.

The Two Popes will open in select theaters on November 27 in the US, November 29 in the UK and on Netflix December 20.
