Academy Award Winner Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It returns to Netflix later this month with its second season.
The streaming service has released the trailer, highlighting that “Summer in Brooklyn just got a whole lot hotter”.
The show, based on Lee’s 1986 breakout film, revolves around Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise), a Fort Greene artist who struggles to stay true to herself and her dreams while juggling three lovers – thoughtful Jamie (Lyriq Bent), playful Mars (Anthony Ramos), and cocky Greer (Cleo Anthony). The upcoming episodes will see Nola trying to find her own artistic voice, as well as figure out the healthiest way to be there for her partner’s daughter. Throughout her journey, she gets help from her partner, Opal (Ilfenesh Hadera), and other close friends – Shemekka (Chyna Layne) and Clorinda (Margot Bingham).
The trailer opens with Nola sharing her envision for this summer, “create like I’ve never created, to be the best partner to my partner that I can be”. She also reveals she doesn’t want to be known just as a painter, she wants to be multidisciplinary, and that she doesn’t want to be more famous for an ad than for her art. “I promise to do the best I can. Be the best I can. With love, Nola Darling,” she also says.
“Find power. Find your strength,” onscreen lines read throughout the trailer, which features the songs “You Should Know That” by R&B/Soul musical artist ZOCK SOLID Aka “Sista Zock”, from her 2016 album “Zock Solid: Where the Stem Meets the Root,” and “You Thought Not” by Morgan James, from her 2017 album “Reckless Abandon”.
She’s Gotta Have It Season 2 premieres May 24 on Netflix.
