Netflix has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming limited series Tales of the City.
Inspired by Armistead Maupin’s books, the new show “begins a new chapter in the beloved story,” according to the streaming service which issued the following synopsis: “Mary Ann (Laura Linney) returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane”.
The teaser opens with Linney’s character in a cab, in San Francisco. “When I first got off the bus years ago, I had the strangest feeling… that I’d come home,” she says in voiceover. In one of the scenes, she tells her daughter the story of how she came to live at Barbary Lane in the first place. Dukakis’ character, Anna Madrigal, is featured saying “There’s no better reward in a person’s life than to see a building turned from walls of brick to a nest of warm stories and warm hearts”.
“Find your home. Choose your family.” onscreen lines read throughout the clip, which includes emotional footage of the characters as they experience a variety of feelings and emotions.
The soundtrack music is “For Today I Am A Boy” by New York City band Antony and the Johnsons, from their second studio album, “I Am A Bird Now,” released in 2005.
Tales of the City premieres on Netflix this summer, on June 7.
