Fox Searchlight has released the trailer for the upcoming film Lucy in the Sky, starring Natalie Portman.
The film, formely titled Pale Blue Dot and loosely based on astronaut Lisa Nowak’s alleged criminal activities involving her romance with astronaut William Oefelein, is directed by TV filmmaker Noah Hawley and stars Portman as a fictionalized version of Nowak, named Lucy Cola, who has a breakdown and starts to lose her grip on reality after completing her mission in space. According to the official synopsis, Cola begins an affair with a fellow astronaut and “heads into a downward spiral as she loses her connection to her family – a condition that can afflict those who spend a long time in space — and when her lover begins another affair with an astronaut trainee, the bottom drops out”.
The cast also includes Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo, and Joe Williamson.
The trailer includes footage of Portman on the spaceship juxtaposed with footage of her on Earth, interacting with her fellow astronaut boyfriend, family, friends and colleagues. “I’m fine,” she tells someone at the end of the trailer, putting on a large smile on her face, even if it is obvious she is not fine.
The film will open in select theaters sometime later in 2019.
