“When you give up on life, life doesn’t give up on you”. This spring, from the mind of Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais, comes a brand new Netflix comedy series called After Life, about a man who had an all-too-perfect life, but decides to change after his wife, Lisa, suddenly dies.
The streaming service has released the official trailer for the show, which, according to the official synopsis, revolves around Tony (Ricky Gervais), a writer for a newspaper who, in his effort to come to terms with his wife’s unexpected death, adopts a gruff new persona. He “decides to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Super Power – not caring about himself or anyone else- but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know”.
The cast also includes Kerry Godliman as Tony’s wife, Lisa, Tony Way as Tony’s best friend, Lenny, Tom Basden as Tony’s brother-in-law, Matt, David Bradley as Tony’s dad, and Ashley Jensen as a Nurse to Tony’s dad, Penelope Wilton, Joe Wilkinson, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley, Mandeep Dhillon, Tim Plester, Roisin Conaty, and Diane Morgan.
The trailer opens with Gervais’ character watching a video of his wife encouraging him to keep going and then with him at a therapist practice, telling the counselor a good day for him is a day he doesn’t go around wanting to shoot random strangers in the face and then turn the gun at himself. The next scenes, scored by Tony’s wife voice giving him instructions from a guide to life without her that she had come up with, feature Tony being rude to everyone around him, from coworkers to random people, including kids.
The soundtrack music is the 2015 song “The Man I Want To Be” by Nick Nolan, included on the 2016 album “Indie Folk 2,” featuring various artists.
The six-part series launches globally on Netflix on March 8, 2019.
