Sainsbury’s has released its Christmas 2018 advert, highlighting that “We give all we’ve got for the ones we love”.
The 2-minute film, titled “The Big Night” and directed by Michael Gracey (the director of The Greatest Showman), features an eight-year-old girl on a stage, costumed as The North Star, overcoming her nerves and giving the performance of her life, all for her mum. As she sings the 1998 single “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals, she is joined and supported by a huge cast of kids (59 from all over Britain, according to the retailer) all aged 6-11 and dressed as a variety of Christmas staples, including a turkey drummer, baubles, a set of Christmas lights, a plug, and even the Queen. The children all dance and sing along as the stage transforms to reveal a Christmas tree that’s 40 feet tall and a 14ft glitter-filled gravy boat.
The UK supermarket chain has also informed that the children’s real parents were featured in the crowd too, and were intentionally kept away from the castings and rehearsals until shoot day.
The special rendition of the New Radicals’ hit single “You Get What You Give” performed by The North Star and Friends x Sainsbury’s is available to listen on Spotify.
