Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming original film Next Gen, an animation about a lonely girl’s friendship with a top-secret robot.
Directed by Kevin R. Adams and Joe Ksander, the film follows rebellious girl named Mai who never liked robots until she met 7723, a powerful robot who it turns out is the only hope for humanity to be saved when the rest of the robots turn into evil creatures, controlled by a scheming madman. The two embark on a mission to save the world, which proves to be an epic adventure .
The voice talent includes John Krasinski, Charlyne Yi, Jason Sudeikis and more.
The trailer opens with Mai and her mother in audience at an unveil event, where a man presents “the next big thing” – the new Gen 6, a robot that creates much enthusiasm among people, but does not impress Mai very much. When she learns that all children must be accompanied by an adult and she should go with one of the thousands of Gen 6 robots spread through her city, she runs away and discovers by mistakes a secret lab, where she meets a top-secret robot. They become friends and realize, as time passes by and challenges come their way, that their friendship is life-changing. “You being here is like the best thing that happened to me,” Mai tells her friend in one of the scenes. She also concludes “There is way too much injustice in the world” and encourages 7723 to fight by saying “Together we can fix it”.
The song used in the trailer is the 2016 single “Startlight” by Jai Wolf (an alias of producer Sajeeb Saha) featuring vocals from Mr. Gabriel.
Next Gen will launch on the streaming service this fall, on September 8.
