Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming original film Nappily Ever After, based on Trisha R. Thomas’s bestselling book of the same name.
The romantic comedy, directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, stars Sanaa Lathan as Violet Jones, a woman who, according to the official synopsis, “has a seemingly flawless life – a great job, a handsome doctor boyfriend, and a meticulously maintained perfect coiffure.” After an accident at the hair-dresser, “each of these things start to unravel, and Violet begins to realize that she was living the life she thought she was supposed to live, not the one that she really wanted”.
The cast also includes Ricky Whittle, Lyriq Bent, Ernie Hudson, Lynn Whitfield, Camille Guaty, Daria Johns, and Brittany S. Hall.
“Ever since I was a kid, my hair was everything,” Lathan’s character says in the trailer. “I had to be fixed. Only then was I perfect.” She is seen trying to be the perfect girlfriend and having her hair always looking perfect, even at the first hours of the morning, but this is apparently one of the reasons her boyfriend, Clint (played by Ricky Whittle), decides to leave her. “You never let your hair down,” he’s heard complaining in one of the scenes. After the accident at the hair salon and a fail at work, she suffers a breakdown and shaves her head. The trailer also includes the moment she realizes what she has done, which is marked by a scream from the top of her lungs.
The song used in the trailer is the 2010 single “Tightrope” by American singer Janelle Monáe, from her debut studio album, The ArchAndroid, released in 2010.
Nappily Ever After is set to launch on the streaming service this fall, on September 21.
