The trailer for the upcoming thriller Lizzie, which tells the story of Lizzie Borden, the notorious woman at the heart of one of the most enduring mysteries in American history, has been released.
Directed by Craig William Macneill, the film stars Academy Award nominee Chloë Sevigny as the infamous woman accused of hacking her father and step-mother to death with an axe, and Kristen Stewart as housemaid Bridget Sullivan, with whom Lizzie has a secret intimate relationship. Described as “a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams,” the film had positive critic reviews, which are shown in the trailer. Karen M. Peterson from Awards Circuit said it “crackles with tension,” Ben Pearson from Slashfilm says it “takes a legend and blows it up from the inside,” Matt Goldberg from Collider said “The chemistry between Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart is electric,” and Fred Topel from Bloody Disgusting labeled the film as “The Lizzie Borden story for the modern generation”.
The trailer, which reveals quite much, with scenes nodding at Lizzie’s father abusing Bridget, Lizzie and Bridget’s relationship, and Lizzie’s trial, after the horrible crime. Finally, another review from Scott Menzel (We Live Entertainment) says “The ending will leave you speechless”.
Lizzie is scheduled to open in select theaters this fall, on September 14.
