Dwayne Johnson returns to the small screen as Spencer Strasmore in the fourth season of Ballers, set to premiere later this month on HBO.
The show, executive produced by Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson (Entourage), explores the lives of former and current football players, following former NFL superstar Spencer Strasmore, who has reinvented himself as a financial manager for current players in sun-soaked Miami, after retiring due to injuries. The cast also includes John David Washington as as NFL pro Ricky Jerret, Rob Corddry as Spencer’s business financial partner and sidekick, Joe Krutel, Eli Goree, Omar Miller, Richard Schiff, Steven Weber, and Russel Brand.
This season, Spencer and Joe take their skills to Los Angeles as they look to expand their roster and horizons in the world of action sports.
The trailer, scored by “Don’t Fall Asleep” by The Siege, features Johnson confirming to a man during a meeting that he’s not “an action sports guy”, but he does like making money. He’s also talking about “a billion-dollar secret” that he’d been sitting on. The new season will also tackle on the the recent controversial issue of NFL players’ right to protest. Ricky Jerret says about the topic: “We can’t complain about injustice. That shit ain’t right”.
“Ballers” has registered as HBO’s second most watched original series currently airing on the channel, behind Game of Thrones (with Westworld close behind). Season 4 will premiere on Sunday, August 12, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
