Netflix has released the trailer for the upcoming film Kodachrome, starring Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris, and Elizabeth Olsen, for which it purchased the rights in September 2017.
Directed by Mark Raso, the movie revolves around Matt (Sudeikis), a struggling A&R executive, and his estranged father (Harris), who was once a famed photojournalist and is now facing terminal cancer, as they embark, together with the nurse of the latter (Olsen), on a road trip from New York to Kansas to develop the last rolls of photographer’s Kodachrome film at the last Kodachrome-capable photo lab remaining in the country.
According to the official synopsis, Kodachrome, which is based on A.G. Sulzberger’s 2010 New York Times article titled “For Kodachrome Fans, Road Ends at Photo Lab in Kansas,” “tells the story of three damaged people coming to terms with themselves, each other, and a world swiftly changing from analog to digital.” The trailer, which comes to support this statement through a series of bitter and touching scenes, also gives viewers a glimpse into the reviews made by major pubblications. Deadline, for instance, has labeled the film as “powerful and entertaining”. “Happiness is a bullshit. You think Picasso was happy?” Harris’ character asks his son in the opening scene of the trailer, which features him smoking a cigarette in the back seat of the car they’re travelling. He then indirectly admits he’s “a miserable asshole” and replies to Matt, who’s asking him if he know he is one, “Do you think I’m an idiot? Of course I know.” The actors’ performance was also praised, Collider stating that “Ed Harris is remarkable” and The Hollywood Reporter that “Jason Sudeikis delivers an outstanding performance”.
The song used in the trailer is “Better Days” by British singer-songwriter Graham Nash, from his debut solo studio album, “Songs for Beginners”, released in May 1971.
Kodachrome will be available on the streaming service starting April 20th, 2018.
