Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming original film The Polka King, starring Jack Black.
Based on a true story, the movie follows the Polish-born bandleader Jan Lewan, aka The Polka King, who, determined to make it big in America, draws his fans into a Ponzi scheme.
Directed by Maya Forbes, who co-wrote the script with Wally Wolodarsky, The Polka King also stars Jenny Slate, Jason Schwartzman, J.B. Smoove, Vanessa Bayer, and Jacki Weaver.
The trailer gives viewers a sneak peek into Lewan’s “adventures” in America, featuring, among others, a scene in which he reveals he has always dreamed of America as a little boy in Poland. Invited to a TV show, where the host highlights that he has “so much going on”, with him being constantly on the road with the band, managing the store he owns, the record label he had started, the radio program, Jan Lewan’s flavored vodka, and – the most recent – Jan Lewan’s European tools, Lewan is seen answering “Jan Lewan always expanding”. The trailer reveals, besides the rise of this polka legend, also his fall, starting with the day a man entered his office and informed him that what he was doing was illegal and that he was supposed to give people’s money back.
The song playing in the background is “Ole Ole Polka” by The Jack Black Polka Band.
The Polka King premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 and is scheduled to be released by the streaming service on January 12th, 2018.
