Martin Freeman stars in a new advert for Vodafone UK, promoting the company’s No Roaming Charges offer.
The 60-second spot, titled “The Wedding” and produced by Ogilvy & Mather London, features the English actor playing Mr. Interruption, a clumsy guest at a wedding in Majorca, where he gives advice to another guest, a lady in red, who is filming the groom and bride’s first dance on the rythms of a cover of the iconic 1967 song “I can’t take my eyes off of you” credited to Frankie Valli. “Hey, filming the happy couple!” – says Freeman’s character to the woman, warning her to make sure she won’t share the video online because that can cost her a lot. The bad thing for him is that he is caught in an embarassing situation when the music stops because everyone, including the couple, hears him say “it’s bad enough having to pay to get out here” (referring to the place the wedding is organised). “Oh, not out here. This is magical” – explains Mr. Interruption to the groom and bride, trying to say that he was talking about something else. At this point, the lady that filmed the dance tells him that it’s ok for her because she’s with Vodafone and there’s no roaming charges.
The spot ends with the voiceover urging you to “Use your phone like you do it at home with the UK’s best network for Roaming” and with the guests continuing the party.
Bilge Ciftci, head of brand at Vodafone UK, stated that they are “very excited” about the launch of the brand’s
new campaign with Martin Freeman. “The central message of the campaign demonstrates how we are removing any
barriers that stop people from connecting and communicating in a way that suits them.” – added Ciftci, mentioning that Freeman’s character enables them to illustrate this idea “in a light-hearted and humorous manner”.
