Skittles has released a dedicated commercial for Mother’s Day where a mom and her grown-up son are sharing Skittles through an umbilical cord.
The spot, running 15- and 30-second long, features the woman having one candy at a time so that her son, who seems to be around 30 years old, connected to her through an umbilical cord, could guess the flavor, which he does. “Oh, mother, I love eating Skittles every time you eat Skittles!”, says the young man looking at her.
His mother answers in the same note: “I love you eating Skittles every time I eat Skittles!” and then they both start laughing. “Oh, I miss dad.” reveals suddenly the “kid”, with a serious look on his face.
After the voiceover says the brand’s tagline, “Cut the rainbow. Taste the rainbow.”, the old lady starring in the ad wishes “Happy Mother’s Day”.
While the brand intended to show “how a quirky mother and her son keep their loving bond stronger than ever”, many of those who have watched the spot describe it as “disturbing”.
