Audi USA has released a holiday commercial, highlighting that playing, just like driving, shouldn’t be a matter of gender and wishing happy holidays to every driver.
The 3-minute spot, titled “Let’s Change the Game”, features a huge toystore where toys come to life at night, doing all kind of activities.
The protagonist of the short film is a Barbie doll who, after having trouble with her carriage, jumps on the shelf with cars and takes an Audi R8 for a ride. “Invited” to get on the passenger’s seat, she declines and sits herself at the steering wheel. As she drives through the store, she watches the animated toys around her and engages herself into a race with a Formula 1 car, that gets lost on the way. Their “contest” is seen by a skydiver who follows them until he crashes into the huge Christmas tree. His head-on collision with it makes a bauble fall to the floor. The respective bauble “chases” the Audi, but the doll manages to save the car and herself by doing a sharp bend.
She doesn’t get the chance to catch her breath, though, because the lights in store are turned on and she must hurry up to get back to her place. She doesn’t manage to do that in time, so she becomes a “normal” doll again, somewhere on the floor, between the shelves.
A little boy picks up the car and tells his mother that that one is the car he wants. His mom, taking the doll out of the car, tells him that the two don’t belong together and puts the doll back on the shelf. The boy decides to take the doll, eventually.
The film ends with the onscreen line “playing, just like driving, shouldn’t be a matter of gender” and with the voiceover saying “Let’s change the game this Christmas”.
