Johnnie Walker Commercial – This Land

“This land was made for you and me. Keep walking America” – this is the message conveyed in the latest Johnnie Walker commercial, celebrating “the optimists, the hard working, and the ones who believe that progress comes from diverse minds working together”, and raising a glass to “the long road ahead”.
The 90-second spot, released by the brand of Scotch whisky on the Eve of Election Day, starts with the onscreen line “Only look back to see how far you’ve come” and features cities like New Orleans, Los Angeles, Washington DC and Santa Fe, as well as a wide variety of people, such as a farmer, a broom, an athlete, a musician, a doctor, and others.
The voiceover, Rommel Molina, recites some of the lyrics of Woody Guthrie’s 1940 folk song This Land Is Your Land, which is a celebration of social justice and inclusion, and – at some point – narrates “This land was made for you and me” in Spanish.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said No Trespassing
But on the other side it said nothing
That side was made for you and me

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me

I’ve roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
