Matthew McConaughey returns to the big screen with an Oscar role in the war drama Free State of Jones.
Written and directed by Gary Ross, the upcoming American production is inspired by the life of Newton Knight, a poor farmer from Mississippi who leaded a group of farmers and local slaves in an armed rebellion against the Confederate army in Jones County, during the American Civil War.
Along McConaughey, star also Gugu Mbatha-Raw, as Rachel Knight, a former enslaved woman that Newton Knight marries, Keri Russel, Mahershala Ali, Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland and others.
Free State of Jones is set to hit US theaters on June 24.
