Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming film Amateur, about a 14-year-old teenager who dreams of becoming a basketball star and discovers that this world is not like he thought it was.
Written and directed by Ryan Koo, the film follows Terron Forte (Michael Rainey Jr.), an eighth grader who is a basketball phenom and is recruited to an elite prep school after a video of him goes viral. This marks a new chapter in his life, with multiple challenges and pressures for him: to fit in with his new team and to deal with the corruption and greed in amateur sports. The cast ensemble includes Josh Charles, Brian White, Sharon Leal, Corey Parker Robinson, Ashlee Brian, Ted Martiz, and others.
“Talent and hard work aren’t enough. You also need someone in the corner who knows the system and how to play it for you,” Josh Charles’ character, Coach Gaines, is heard the teenager in the trailer. Offered a full-ride scholarship by Gaines as a way to show how they believe in his potential, Terron goes to an elite prep school, where things prove to be different than he had imagined.
The song used in the trailer is “Ambition to Win” by Mann.
Amateur is set to be released by the streaming service on April 6.
